Wilson Brothers, Joanna and Larry

Bands / Ensembles

The Wilson Brothers, Joanna and Larry was the childhood formation of a bluegrass band from southwestern Virginia originally active in the mid1960s. The band consisted of brothers Greg (guitar) and Gary Wilson (banjo) and their younger sister Joanna (bass) (her name often appears as Joann or Jody). They were joined by Larry Lindsey on mandolin. The Wilsons were from Fries, Virginia, and Larry Lindsey from Galax, Virginia. They recorded two singles for Justice Recording and an LP for MRC sometime in the mid to late 60s. In 1965 they performed at the very first multiday bluegrass festival produced by Carlton Haney in Fincastle, Virginia. They performed and competed at festivals throughout the southeast in the following decade and even performed on the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee. Joanna and Larry’s fates are unknown but Greg and Gary continued to have a prolific recording career into adulthood performing as the Wilson Brothers.
