Vanguard Records
Labels / Record Companies
Vanguard Records was founded in New York in 1950 by brothers Maynard and Seymour Solomon. It started as a classical label and became a pillar of the folk revival, signing the blacklisted Weavers and Paul Robeson and then Joan Baez, Ian & Sylvia, Buffy Sainte-Marie, and Doc Watson. Its roots catalog also includes the Country Gentlemen, the Dillards, and Alison Brown. Vanguard recorded the Newport Folk Festival in the 1960s, the source of its compilation Newport Folk Festival: Best of Bluegrass 1959–1966. The Welk Music Group bought the label in 1985, and Concord acquired it in 2015.
