Tennessee Firecrackers

Bands / Ensembles

The Tennessee Firecrackers were a country string band formed in the early 1930s by fiddler Curly Fox, who led it on radio station WSB in Atlanta, Georgia. Fox, born Arnim LeRoy Fox in Graysville, Tennessee, in 1910, came to WSB after playing in medicine shows and with Claude Davis and the Carolina Tar Heels, where he got the nickname "Curly." He then formed the Tennessee Firecrackers and led them on WSB during the Depression. Around 1934 Fox joined the Shelton Brothers, who had come to Atlanta, and moved with them to WWL in New Orleans. He recorded with them for Decca until 1936. Fox later married singer Texas Ruby and became a member of the Grand Ole Opry.
