Sharon Horovitch
Sharon Horovitch is a Canadian-born bluegrass bassist, vocalist, and biologist. Born to a family of Eastern European immigrants in Canada, she earned her undergraduate degree in biology from McGill University before relocating to Massachusetts to complete her Ph.D. in biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. While a graduate student at MIT, she took up the bass after meeting her classmate and future husband, guitarist Jim Muller. In 1978, the couple co-founded Southern Rail which became a mainstay of the Boston-area bluegrass scene. Serving as the band’s booking agent, publicist, and high-harmony vocalist, she led the band through decades of national touring and over a dozen recording projects on their Railway Records imprint including a special bluegrass gospel compilation that earned a Gospel Album of the Year nomination from the International Bluegrass Music Association. She and Muller were inducted into the Rhode Island Bluegrass Alliance's New England Bluegrass Hall of Fame in 2019.
