Sara Carter
Sara Elizabeth Carter (née Dougherty; July 21, 1898 – January 8, 1979) was a singer, guitarist, and autoharp player from Copper Creek, Virginia. She sang lead in the original Carter Family. She married A. P. Carter on June 18, 1915. In 1927 she, A. P., and her cousin Maybelle Carter began recording as the Carter Family, starting with the Bristol Sessions that August. She sang lead on most of the group's recordings in the 1920s and 1930s. She also wrote or co-wrote songs including "My Foothills Home," "Lonesome Pine Special," and "Railroading on the Great Divide." She and A. P. divorced in 1936 but kept recording together. She later married his cousin Coy Bayes and moved to California in 1943, and the original Carter Family broke up. She and Maybelle reunited for the Columbia album An Historic Reunion (1966) and sang together on The Wilburn Brothers Show. Her children, Gladys, Janette, and Joe, carried on the family's music. Janette and Joe later ran the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia. The original Carter Family was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1970 and into IBMA's Hall of Honor in 2001. She died in Lodi, California, in 1979, at age 80.
