Red Henry

Red Henry is a mandolinist, songwriter, and recording producer. He took up mandolin in 1967, at 18, while in college in north Florida, with help from his uncle John Hedgecoth. After college he served in the Air Force. He married banjo player Murphy Hicks in 1974, and the next year the couple moved to Florida and formed Red and Murphy, which became Red and Murphy & Co. The band played full time on the Southeast festival circuit from 1975 to 1986, at various times with Murphy's sisters Argen, Laurie, and Nancy Hicks and with guitarist David McLaughlin. The band recorded seven albums for the couple's Arrandem label between 1976 and 1985. The family moved to Winchester, Virginia, in 1986, and the band later continued as Red and Murphy and Their Excellent Children, with their children Casey and Chris Henry. He and Murphy founded the Murphy Method, where he has handled production, video editing, shipping, and accounting. He also did layout and computer work for Murphy's Women in Bluegrass newsletter. He has worked on a one-piece maple bridge for the mandolin.
