Rebel Records

Labels / Record Companies

Rebel Records is one of the oldest independent bluegrass labels. It was founded in 1959 in Mount Rainier, Maryland, by Dick Freeland, Bill Carroll, and Sonny Compton. In 1980 Freeland sold it to Dave Freeman, founder of County Records and County Sales, whose son Mark Freeman later took over management. Now based in Charlottesville, Virginia, Rebel has more than 340 titles in print. Its catalog includes the Country Gentlemen, the Stanley Brothers, Ralph Stanley, the Seldom Scene, Reno and Smiley, Larry Sparks, IIIrd Tyme Out, Blue Highway, and the early Lonesome River Band.
