Patsy Stoneman

Pattie Inez "Patsy" Stoneman (May 27, 1925 – July 23, 2015) was an autoharp player, guitarist, singer, bandleader, and manager. Born in Galax, Virginia, she was the fourth child of Ernest V. "Pop" Stoneman and Hattie Frost Stoneman. She grew up in the family's music, and around 1939 she performed with her father in his comeback shows. In 1963 she formed a band in the Washington, D.C., area and led it for five years, playing bluegrass or country depending on the lineup. Its members included Red Allen, Porter Church, Buzz Busby, Bill Emerson, Frank Wakefield, Ed Ferris, Roy Self, her brother Scott Stoneman, and Bill and Wayne Yates. She rejoined the Stonemans in 1964 or 1965 and took over leadership of the band after her father died in 1968. She was also one of the voices of Disneyland's Country Bear Jamboree. From 1977 she served as the band's unofficial manager, with her husband, John "Jack" Murphy. She produced the double album The First Family of Country Music in 1981, recorded Patsy Sings Pop … Stoneman That Is!, a collection of her father's songs, and made two albums with her sisters Donna and Roni Stoneman. In 1987 she launched the weekly radio program At Home with the Stonemans on WSVT. She led the effort behind Ivan M. Tribe's 1993 history The Stonemans and campaigned for about forty years for her father's induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame, which came in 2008. She died at her home in Manchester, Tennessee, in 2015, at age 90.
