Pacific High Recording was an independent studio founded in Sausalito in 1968. In 1969 it moved into a former plastics factory in San Francisco, a few blocks from the Fillmore West. It was the first 12-track studio on the West Coast and a hub of the San Francisco sound. Sly and the Family Stone recorded Stand! there, and the Grateful Dead finished Aoxomoxoa there and recorded Workingman's Dead there in 1970. The studio also hosted the first New Riders of the Purple Sage session and Commander Cody's Lost in the Ozone. Alembic took it over in 1971, and DJ Tom Donahue broadcast live KSAN concerts from its stage, including sets by Jerry Garcia. In 1973 producer Elliot Mazer bought the studio and renamed it His Master's Wheels, where the David Grisman Quintet recorded Hot Dawg (1978). Mazer stopped maintaining the studio in 1978.
