Old-Time Herald
Publishers / Periodicals
The Old-Time Herald was a magazine devoted to old-time music and dance, especially the traditions of the southeastern United States. Musician Alice Gerrard founded it in 1987, partly inspired by her friendship with Bluegrass Unlimited co-editor Pete Kuykendall and the idea that old-time music needed a similar publication. She edited it until 2003, followed by Gail Gillespie and then Sarah Bryan. It was published by the nonprofit Old Time Music Group. It was originally based in Galax, Virginia, but was produced from Durham, North Carolina, for most of its run. Over more than 35 years, until 2023, it carried articles and reviews written largely by musicians, and its back issues have since been digitized as an archive.
