Nugget

Bands / Ensembles

Nugget (1976–) is a bluegrass band from Vienna, Austria, founded in early 1976 by Helmut and Werner Mitteregger and Wolfgang Motzko. Its early years brought frequent lineup changes. The band gave its first serious performances in Vienna in 1977. Helmut and Werner Mitteregger were the only constant members through the band's first U.S. tour in 1984. In 1985, with Willie Bell, Hannes Neubauer and Thomas Reingruber, Nugget recorded its first album, Golden Distance. From 1989 Helmut recruited musicians from abroad, including Ingo Sandhofen of Munich, Thierry Massoubre of Paris, Katarina Porizkova of Slovakia and several Czech musicians, among them Jaromír Jahoda. From 1990 to about 2000 the band mostly played as a trio built around Helmut, Katarina and Massoubre. Jakub Racek filled in for Massoubre for about fifteen years, and Massoubre rejoined in 2016.
