Nancy Josephson
Nancy Josephson (born 1955) is an American acoustic bassist, singer, songwriter, and visual artist who pioneered women's roles in bluegrass as a core member of the Buffalo Gals, widely recognized as the first all-female bluegrass band. Recruited in the early 1970s while the Syracuse University-founded group was solidifying its lineup, she tracked acoustic upright bass and vocals on their landmark album First Borne (1975). Throughout the late 1970s, she toured with roots legends including Arlo Guthrie and Peter Rowan, and frequently shared festival bills with multi-instrumentalist David Bromberg, whom she married in 1979. After a multi-decade hiatus from full-time music to establish an acclaimed career as a mixed-media visual artist and author, Josephson returned to the acoustic music scene in 2006 to found and front The Angel Band, a roots-Americana ensemble.
