Mary A. Bufwack

Mary A. Bufwack is an American cultural anthropologist, roots music historian, and healthcare administrator. Born in Ohio, she earned her Bachelor of Science in anthropology from the University of Pittsburgh before completing her Ph.D. in anthropology at Washington University in St. Louis. Her early academic career included serving for seven years on the faculty at Colgate University in upstate New York. Her primary contribution to roots music scholarship stems from her extensive, multi-decade collaboration with her husband, music journalist Robert K. Oermann. Together, they authored the definitive volume Finding Her Voice: The Saga of Women in Country Music (1993), an exhaustive social and cultural history documenting the lives, working-class contexts, and musical contributions of female performers from 19th-century folk traditions to modern commercial eras. The text was later expanded and adapted into a network television special for CBS. Beyond her musicological work, she spent over twenty-five years as a community healthcare advocate in Nashville, Tennessee, serving as the longtime CEO of Neighborhood Health.
