Joy of Cooking
Bands / Ensembles
Joy of Cooking (1967–1973) was a rock band from Berkeley, California, led by guitarist Terry Garthwaite and pianist Toni Brown, who shared lead vocals. The band mixed rock with folk, blues and jazz and was one of the few rock bands of its era fronted by women. It began as Gourmet's Delight, with Garthwaite, Brown, Terry's brother David Garthwaite on bass, Fritz Kasten on drums and Ron Wilson on percussion. Jeff Neighbor later took over on bass. The band released three studio albums, and its single "Brownsville" reached No. 66 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1971. Keyboardist Stevie Roseman filled in for Brown for a time, and Garthwaite kept the band going with guitarist Glen Frendel near the end. Joy of Cooking broke up in 1973, the year it recorded a fourth album that went unreleased.
