Janette Carter
Janette Carter (1923–2006) was an American singer and autoharp player. The youngest daughter of A.P. and Sara Carter, she performed on radio and recorded with her family as a youth, famously serving as her father's melody "tape recorder" during rural song-gathering trips. Fulfilling a deathbed promise to A.P. Carter to carry on his work, she began hosting informal roots concerts in his old general store before co-founding the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia, in 1976. She was awarded the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) National Heritage Fellowship in 2005.
