IIIrd Tyme Out

Bands / Ensembles

IIIrd Tyme Out (1991–present), known since 2009 as Russell Moore and IIIrd Tyme Out, is a bluegrass band formed in Georgia in 1991. That year, guitarist and lead singer Russell Moore, bassist and bass singer Ray Deaton, and fiddler Mike Hartgrove left Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, and mandolinist Alan Bibey and banjo player Terry Baucom soon joined them. The band took its name from the fact that for most members it was their third professional band. Its self-titled debut came out on Rebel Records in 1991. By its third album, Grandpa's Mandolin (1993), Wayne Benson had replaced Bibey on mandolin and Barry Abernathy had replaced Baucom on banjo. Known for its harmony singing, including Moore's lead and Deaton's bass vocals, the band won IBMA Vocal Group of the Year seven years running, from 1994 through 2000, and has won more than 50 industry awards overall. Benson has played mandolin in the band from 1992 to 2004 and again since 2007.
