Grand Ole Opry

Venues

The Grand Ole Opry is a regular live country music radio show broadcast on WSM from Nashville, Tennessee between 2-5 times a week. The show was founded in 1925 by George D. Hay but did not take on its current name until 1927. It is the world's longest-running radio show. Over the past century, it has evolved into a legendary live entertainment phenomenon. Beyond its involvement with popularizing mainstream country, the Opry served as the birthplace for bluegrass music. Bill Monroe auditioned with his new band The Blue Grass Boys in 1939 and became an immediate hit setting the stage for future significant moments in bluegrass including Earl Scruggs’ debut with the band in December 1945.
