Gary Scruggs
Gary Scruggs (1949–2021) was an American country-rock and bluegrass bassist, singer, songwriter, and record producer who holds a bachelor's degree in philosophy from Vanderbilt University. The eldest son of bluegrass pioneer Earl Scruggs, he contributed to Flatt & Scruggs' albums as a teenager before collaborating with his brother Randy as the Scruggs Brothers and co-founding the progressive, family-led ensemble The Earl Scruggs Revue in 1969. He famously instigated the historical cross-generational collaboration that resulted in the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's landmark 1972 album, Will the Circle Be Unbroken, and later spent years working as a backing multi-instrumentalist, road manager, and studio producer for country titan Waylon Jennings.
