Born in Aurora, Illinois, and raised in Yorkville, Illinois, she began training in classical Suzuki violin at age five before pursuing fiddling during her youth. At age 14, she was a founding member of Petticoat Junction, an all-female traditional bluegrass band formed in 1989. That same year she was named the Illinois State Fiddle Champion. She relocated to Tennessee to attend Belmont University, graduating in 1995 with a Bachelor of Music in violin performance and an emphasis in music business. Following her graduation, she spent years touring globally and performing on the Grand Ole Opry as the longtime touring fiddle player for country music icon Bill Anderson.
