Cotton Patch Gospel
Other Works / Media (Movie)
Cotton Patch Gospel is a 1981 stage musical written by Tom Key and Russell Treyz, with music and lyrics by Harry Chapin. Based on Clarence Jordan’s Cotton Patch translations of the Gospels of Matthew and John, it reimagines the life of Jesus in modern-day rural Georgia. Performed either as a one-man show with a bluegrass quartet or by a larger cast, the production blends reverence and wit with country and bluegrass-inspired songs. Premiering off-Broadway in 1981, it remains popular in regional and church productions for its fresh, accessible retelling of the Gospel message.
