The American Folklore Society is the professional association for folklorists in the United States, founded in 1888 by William Wells Newell and a circle of scholars, with Harvard's Francis James Child as its first president. Based at Indiana University in Bloomington, it holds an annual meeting each October and publishes the quarterly Journal of American Folklore. Its roughly 2,200 members include academics, public folklorists, archivists, and arts administrators.
